If she were a betting woman—and despite her profession, Bridget wasn’t—she would lay odds that Ethan Ford was going to break her heart.

He already had a little, with the sad way he spoke about his brother, with a longing that made her chest ache. But there was no way she was slowing down to think about the risks. Not now. Not when the man had one large hand gripping her hip like it was a life raft in a stormy sea. Not when his lips burned down her neck, marking her, and her body begged for more.

She swung a knee across his lap and straddled him, closing her eyes as his beard tickled her neck and sent shivers throughout her body. Ethan groaned as she pressed her body against his, then leaned his head against the back of the couch and watched her through hooded eyes. She reached up and caressed his face, running a hand over the short, trimmed beard on his jaw.

“Too rough?” he asked, his voice low.

Her body answered the question with a deep throb at her core. She shook her head. “No, I like it.”

“You sure? I can shave.”

“No, I don’t want you to.”

“Cause I like going into soft places and—”

She gripped his face with both hands and stopped him from talking. “Talk is cheap, Sheriff.”

A slow smile spread across his face, his warm brown eyes lit up, and his grip on her tightened. With a quick move, he set her aside, stood and pulled her close to him, his hands on her hips. Bridget tipped her head back to look at him and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Take me to bed, Ethan.”

He blew out a long breath when she said his name, his eyes dilating with passion. When he leaned toward her, she stood on her toes and met him halfway in a kiss that made her head spin and her body shake. When they broke apart, panting, he grabbed her hand and tugged her toward the front door, where he flipped the lock and turned off the porch light. He hit another switch and the gas fireplace went dark. Then he pulled her down the short hallway, past the stairs, and into a darkened room. Without turning on a light, he lifted her easily, took a few long steps across the room and dropped her into the middle of the bed, where she landed with a bounce.

Ethan followed her down, his body covering hers and enveloping her in his scent, an intoxicating mix of soap and leather and something unique to him. Bridget took a deep breath, inhaling it in. She ran a hand up his chest, working the buttons on his shirt free. Her fingers fumbled with the buttons, anxious to feel his hot skin. Then his shirt was wide open, and he shrugged it off and she splayed her hands on his chest, trying to feel as much of him as possible—the hard muscles under the warm skin bunching at her touch.
